Spotify is expanding the functionality of its AI DJ feature by introducing voice command capability, giving Premium subscribers greater control over their music experience. This update transforms the DJ feature from a passive, algorithm-driven playlist generator into an interactive assistant that can respond to specific requests for artists, genres, moods, and even conceptual music experiences. The enhancement addresses a key limitation of the original feature by allowing users to actively shape their listening sessions rather than simply accepting the AI’s selections.

How it works: Spotify Premium users can now use English voice commands to personalize their AI DJ experience by pressing and holding the DJ button.

  • After pressing the button located in the bottom right corner of the DJ interface, users will hear a beep signaling they can make verbal requests like “play me some electronic beats for a midday run.”
  • Previously, this button only allowed users to randomly change the current song without any control over what would play next.

Key capabilities: The voice command feature allows for both specific and conceptual music requests, borrowing from Spotify’s AI Playlist technology.

  • Users can request specific artists and genres or more abstract concepts like “play me some music to soundtrack my life as a movie.”
  • The functionality incorporates elements from Spotify’s AI Playlist building feature that was launched in beta last year, which creates tracklists based on text prompts.

Limitations remain: Voice commands are currently the only method for controlling the AI DJ’s selections, which creates accessibility challenges in certain environments.

  • Users in public spaces or quiet settings where speaking aloud isn’t practical may find this voice-only control system awkward or unusable.
  • For specific song requests, Spotify acknowledges that directly selecting tracks through the app interface may still be more efficient than relying on the AI DJ to queue them.
